President Obama’s administration has released a warning to American power companies, water suppliers, and transportation networks about similar cyberattacks to those that disabled Ukraine’s power grid on December 23. The United States has been investigating the sophistication of the attacks and has determined that the ability for attackers to work remotely to switch breakers on and off is a reasonable threat for all Western countries, particularly the United States. Furthermore, Western countries with more refined power grids than the Ukraine could be more vulnerable to prolonged cyberattacks through malware since there is no ‘old-style’ circuit breakers to restore power. Although the Obama administration as been hesitant to blame a perpetrator for the attacks in the Ukraine, it is widely believed to have been conducted by the Russian military or ‘patriotic hackers’.
