The Indian police have detained five men working at the Puttingal temple in Paravur in connection with an explosion and subsequent fire that killed over 100 people this weekend. Unauthorized fireworks show are being blamed for the deadly explosion in Kerala. The temple had previously been denied permission for the fireworks show because of safety reasons, but apparently decided to continue with the show. A judicial inquiry has been ordered by Indian authorities to investigate the incident and those who may have been involved with the decision to go through with the fireworks display. Thousands of people had been at the Hindu temple to celebrate in the local new year festival. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the hospital housing the victims as “heart-rending and shocking beyond words”.
