John Ridsdel, a former Canadian mining executive, was killed by the Abu Sayyaf Islamist militant group in the Philippines. He was taken last September from a tourist resort near the city of Davao with two others: another Canadian, Robert Hall and Hall’s Philippine girlfriend, Marites Flor. After the kidnapping, they were taken to the island of Jolo, where ransom videos were filmed and released from, demanding $80 million for their release. Soon after the deadline for the exchange passed, a severed head was discovered in the streets of Jolo. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the death, calling it “an act of cold-blooded murder”.
