On Friday, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will meet with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla in Havana to finally come to an agreement to improve relations. The European bloc and the communist island have not been in relations with one another since 2003, when the EU suspended its Cuban interactions. The European Union has been extremely critical of the Castro regime’s rumored human rights violations towards political opponents. The meeting comes about a month before President Obama’s historical trip to Cuba following the reestablishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Mogherini has expressed hope that the progress made between the United States and Cuba is a precursor to the potential relationship the European Union can have with the island also.
