Transactional politics, a political approach in which governments reciprocate each other’s actions in equal measure, have regained popularity after the election of Donald Trump. Transactional politics also transfers spending from what is regarded as ‘non-essential’ matters (e.g. culture, foreign aid, etc.) to other things regarded as ‘essential’ (e.g.military and defense). Media has been one of the sectors affected by transactional politics being that, whereas in the past some governments invested in the media to encourage the spread of freedom of expression, democracy, and accountability, now more and more governments are investing in the media to pursue their political agenda. Changes in the ways governments communicate with the public can be seen to be possible threats to traditional media coverage.
